The strategy of making data-informed decisions when designing initiatives that address educational issues is recognized as a best practice in higher education but hasn’t led to effective solutions and programs that lead to consistent, repeatable student success. The result is often a patchwork of remedies that deliver short-term results that don’t build foundations for student success over the long-term. This leaves academic leadership with only a shallow understanding of the reasons behind less-than-desirable student outcomes. In this presentation, we will discuss how a multi-layered, deep data approach provides a fuller, actionable examination of why equity gaps exist and how deep data uncovers the “whys” of situations or characteristics that either impede or support student success. When a deep data approach is applied and key learnings extracted, a clearer vision of what student success can look like emerges.
